Redouté was called "the Raphael of flowers," and this is his most famous bloom — the hundred-petalled cabbage rose, rendered in the stipple engraving he perfected, every petal soft as breath. Painted from the roses of the Empress Joséphine's garden at Malmaison. No flower plate is more loved, or more copied. It is also June's flower, which is why it hangs at the centre of this house: the rose everyone means when they say the word.
