The China roses arrived in Europe in the 1790s carrying the single most valuable trait in the history of the flower: they bloom repeatedly, all season, instead of once in June. Every modern rose descends from that import. This plate catches the moment of the crossing — a Chinese rose in a French garden being drawn by the greatest flower painter in Europe, a few years before the hybridisers got hold of it and changed the plant forever. Everything in a modern rose garden starts on plates like this one.
