A rose from the Kamchatka peninsula — the far eastern edge of Russia, a place of volcanoes and eight-month winters — with the thick crinkled leaves and heavy hips of the rugosa group. Les Roses is often read as a book about a French garden, and it is; it is also a map of how far the plant collectors of 1800 had got. Malmaison held roses from China, from Persia, from the Pacific coast of Siberia. The Empress's rose garden was a map of the reach of empire.
