The moss rose is a sport of the cabbage rose in which the sepals and stem erupt in a sticky green fur that smells of pine when touched, and the Victorians were besotted with it. This is the white form. The technical marvel of the plate is that Redouté renders a white flower without white — the bloom is built entirely from greys and greens against the paper, which is left to do the work. The whitest flower in the book is the one with no white on it.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
