The double moss rose, pink and crowded, with the characteristic furred bud beside it — Redouté nearly always draws a rose with a bud, because the bud is where a rose is identified. The "moss" is glandular growth that releases a resinous, balsam scent when rubbed; a moss rose is a flower you are meant to touch, which is unusual and slightly scandalous for a formal garden plant. A rose bred to be handled.
