A semi-double form of the common hedge rose — five petals becoming ten, pale and almost weightless, the kind of thing that grows in a ditch. Les Roses is remembered as a book of luxuries, and the surprise on going through it properly is how many of the 169 plates are wild species and hedgerow forms, drawn with exactly the same care as the show roses. Redouté was a botanist first. The ditch rose got the same hours as the Empress's.
