Named for the shape of its hip — turbinata, turban-like — which swells below the flower into a broad top and is as distinctive as the bloom. Redouté draws the hip as carefully as the petals, because that is where the identification lives, and a rose plate that only shows you a pretty flower is a decoration rather than a record. The house sells these as art; they were made as evidence. The flower is the advertisement. The hip is the proof.
