The opium poppy, drawn with the flower and the ripening capsule on the same stem — which is the honest way to draw it, since the capsule is the entire reason the plant has been cultivated for six thousand years. Thornton's project was to illustrate Linnaeus's sexual system of classification, so his plates keep insisting on the reproductive parts even when the picture is at its most romantic. The romance and the botany are the same subject. He was always drawing the mechanism.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
