Hyacinths — blue, white, and a deep bruised rose — massed in the foreground while behind them the sky does something operatic. Thornton's flowers are never merely specimens; they are characters, staged, each plate given a landscape and a weather to act against. The Dutch bulb trade had spent two centuries turning a modest Levantine flower into this, a spike so heavy with florets it has to be staked. Thornton paints it as though it knows.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
