Thornton's *Temple of Flora* set flowers against dramatic skies and landscapes as no botanical book ever had — and this is its masterpiece: the cereus, which opens for a single night, blooming against a moonlit river with a clock tower striking twelve. Botany as high Romantic theatre. The clock is not decoration: it tells you the hour the flower opens, and the hour it will be gone.
