Not every plate in Braun and Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum maps a city proper — this one, engraved by Simon Novellanus, surveys the Inn river valley in the Tyrolean Alps, the mountain landscape rendered with the same panoramic ambition the atlas usually reserved for urban skylines. Two inset panels at lower left and right add local detail: the Schlossberg fortress tucked into forested hills, and a monument commemorating Emperor Charles V, whose Habsburg empire once controlled this alpine trade corridor. What to notice: the crosshatched mountain slopes are engraved with an almost obsessive density, an attempt to convey real topographic drama through pure line work decades before contour mapping existed as a technique — Novellanus was essentially inventing a visual vocabulary for mountainous terrain as he etched it.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
