Sugiura Hisui’s travel poster for cormorant fishing and summer pleasure on the Nagara River, Gifu Prefecture. Same commercial-design hand as the subway poster, aimed at leisure travel rather than infrastructure — Sugiura worked both registers for the same modernizing Japan. The firelight of the cormorant boats rendered as flat warm shapes against a cool river. A very old fishing method, sold as a very modern night out.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
