The road’s hardest passage: a daimyō procession threads the Hakone pass as a line of tiny figures, jagged crags towering in bold faceted color above the deep blue of Lake Ashi, Fuji white and small beyond. Hakone was the Tōkaidō’s most feared barrier — the steepest climb and the strictest checkpoint — and Hiroshige answers it with the boldest invention in the series, a mountain broken into planes of raw color a century before anyone called such seeing modern. The crags are pure invention — no outline holds them, only faceted patches of green, blue, ochre and rust; the procession is reduced to ant-small figures swallowed by the pass. The mountain is crossed one small figure at a time.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
