Travelers leave Mishima before the world is fully awake: a rider hunched on horseback and a palanquin crew move through gray dawn fog, the shrine torii and the townsfolk behind them dissolving into silhouette. The receding figures are printed in flat tones of gray with no keyblock outline at all — one of the most admired atmospheric effects ever achieved in the medium, fog made from ink and restraint. Only the foreground travelers are drawn in full line and color; everything behind them exists in two shades of gray, and the farthest figures are barely a breath on the paper. The day begins before the world is solid.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
