The journey ends: travelers, porters, and pilgrims cross the long wooden span of the Sanjō Bridge over the Kamo River into the imperial capital, the Higashiyama hills soft and green beyond the rooftops. The final sheet of the series — arrival, after fifty-three stations. And a famous tell hides in it: Hiroshige drew the bridge’s celebrated stone pilings as plain wood, a slip taken as evidence he composed the capital from other men’s pictures rather than from the road itself. The bridge fills the sheet edge to edge, everyone on it mid-crossing; beyond the far bank, Kyoto is rooftops dissolving into the green of the hills — a destination kept just out of reach even now. Every arrival is imagined long before it is reached.
