An advertising poster for the Keystone comedy released in November 1912, held by the Library of Congress. Keystone opened in 1912 and within three years had industrialised American screen comedy - the chases, the pratfalls, the company that would shortly employ half the great silent comedians. Paper from its opening months is genuinely scarce. How little the design assumes: no established house style yet, because there was not one to draw on. Slapstick, before it knew its own name.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
