Toulouse-Lautrec’s poster for the Moulin Rouge, starring the dancer La Goulue silhouetted against a gaslit crowd. His first poster, and one that instantly reset what a poster could be — flat color fields, a photographer’s crop, no sentimentality about Montmartre’s nightlife. The foreground dancer rendered as pure black silhouette against the crowd’s pale, ghostly faces. The cabaret, drawn without apology.
