Le Carceri d'Invenzione (Imaginary Prisons) is Piranesi at his least documentary and most purely inventive: sixteen etched plates of vast, impossible carceral architecture — stairways that lead nowhere, chains and pulleys suspended over bottomless drops, arches stacked on arches into total spatial confusion — with no real building behind any of it. This plate, the series' most reproduced and most discussed, centers a torture rack and a colossal severed head mounted on a pedestal amid a tangle of beams, ropes, and receding arcades that dissolve into darkness before any wall or floor resolves the space. What to notice: Piranesi reworked the entire series for a darker 1761 second edition, adding heavier shading and more sinister detail than his 1750 first state — this is that revised, more nightmarish version, the one that went on to influence two centuries of Gothic fiction, Escher's impossible architecture, and modern dystopian film design.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
