A fresco of a slender fantastical candelabrum crowned by a miniature frieze, on a saturated red ground, from the imperial villa at Boscotrecase. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain work in The Metropolitan Museum (CC0). The red is the house’s own colour, straight from the source. Ornament, when it is this sure of itself, becomes the subject.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
