Etched in 1776, near the height of Piranesi's fame, this view of the Flavian Amphitheater — the Colosseum — is one of the most reproduced images in his entire Vedute di Roma series. Piranesi shows the ruin from an oblique, dramatically raking angle, its weathered arcades catching hard Roman light against a churning sky, ivy and scrub visibly reclaiming the upper tiers. What to notice: this is a working ruin, not a tidy one — Piranesi drew Rome's decay honestly, populated with tiny figures of clergy, tourists, and laborers going about ordinary business inside a monument built for gladiatorial spectacle seventeen centuries earlier. His views did more than document Rome; they shaped the entire Grand Tour generation's romantic idea of ruin as beautiful, not merely fallen — an idea that still governs how we photograph old stone today.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
