Etched between about 1750 and 1759, this view depicts the Palazzo Barberini on the Quirinal Hill, the family seat Gian Lorenzo Bernini helped design for one of 17th-century Rome's most powerful papal dynasties — Piranesi's caption credits Bernini by name, a rare instance of him crediting a specific architect within the Vedute series. Unlike the ancient ruins that dominate most of his views, the Barberini palace was still a functioning aristocratic residence in Piranesi's own century, giving this plate a different register: less elegy, more portrait of power. What to notice: Piranesi frames the palace across an open piazza, using the same dramatic scale tricks he applied to ancient Rome — tiny carriages and figures making the Baroque façade read as monumental as anything the Caesars built. Rome's ancient and Baroque grandeur, in his hands, were really the same subject.
