Where most of Piranesi's Vedute di Roma turn ruin into spectacle, this plate — etched around 1748, early in the series — trains the same theatrical eye on a building still very much in use: the soaring nave of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, completed little more than a century before Piranesi drew it. He pushes the vanishing point deep into the composition, exaggerating the nave's real scale until the tiny worshippers scattered across the floor look almost incidental. What to notice: Piranesi trained as an architect before he became a printmaker, and it shows here more than almost anywhere else in his output — every column, cornice, and coffered vault is drawn with a structural engineer's precision even as the whole scene tips toward the sublime. It is less a record of a building than an argument about what architecture can do to a human body standing inside it.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
