A one-sheet for Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush — the film Chaplin said he wished to be remembered by, the Tramp starving in a cabin on the edge of the world. The Gold Rush turned slapstick into pathos; its imagery — the boot dinner, the teetering cabin — became part of the language of comedy. The little figure is dwarfed by white space, the whole sheet a snowfield with one black silhouette in it. Hunger, made gentle.
