An advertisement for a fashionable Montmartre café-concert, and one of the most elegant designs Lautrec ever made. The dancer Jane Avril sits in the foreground in a sweep of black, a picture of poised boredom; behind her the critic Édouard Dujardin leans in, top hat and yellow gloves; on the distant stage a singer throws up her arms — but Lautrec crops her head clean off, so all we get is the famous long black gloves. Everything is arrangement: the black mass of the gown, the mustard ground, the economy of line. He makes sophistication look effortless. The whole seductive world of 1890s Montmartre, in three colours.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
