Another plate from Giuseppe Vasi's Delle magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna, this one records the Ponte Nomentano, a fortified bridge of ancient Roman origin (rebuilt and crenellated in the medieval period) still carrying the Via Nomentana across the Aniene river just outside the city. Vasi shows travelers and a small gathered crowd at the roadside, the bridge's defensive tower keeping watch over a route that had carried traffic in and out of Rome for well over a thousand years by the time this plate was etched. What to notice: unlike the isolated, timeless ruins Piranesi favored, Vasi's Rome is a working city — bridges still crossed, roads still traveled, walls still standing guard — ancient infrastructure caught still doing its ancient job.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
