A French affiche of 1930 for Maurice Tourneur's courtroom drama Accusée, levez-vous !, drawn by Roland Coudon. By 1930 the French industry had converted to sound, and the courtroom picture — all testimony and confession — was among the first genres to exploit it. Coudon was one of the affichistes who carried the drawn French poster across that break into the sound era. The design still works like a silent sheet, telling the story through pose and staging rather than announcing that the film talks. An old craft, keeping its hand in as the medium changed underneath it.
