A German placard of 1919 for the film Alkohol, carrying the design signature of Hans Rudi Erdt, one of the defining figures of the Berlin Sachplakat generation. The immediate postwar German market was thick with Aufklärungsfilme — social-problem pictures whose real trade was in spectacle. Their advertising had to promise instruction and deliver derangement, and this is what that compromise looked like. Erdt's method is reduction: the fewest possible elements, held by a single dominant colour mass. Nothing here is decorative. A warning poster that sells the thing it warns against.
