A Swedish release placard of 1928 for the German film Alraune, designed by Eric Rohman, the Stockholm artist who drew a large share of Sweden's cinema advertising between the wars. Henrik Galeen's Alraune is the German fantastic at full strength — the mandrake legend rebuilt as a story about laboratory creation and its consequences. The Swedish sheets for German horror imports are frequently bolder than the domestic German ones, and Rohman is the reason. Rohman worked in gouache at poster scale, and the surface holds a painterly, slightly liquid quality that lithographed German placards of the same year do not have. Something grown deliberately, and never once asked.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
