Most arquebusier angels in this collection date to the 17th or 18th century, the genre's classic period — this canvas is later, an Andean 19th-century continuation of the same courtier-and-musket format decades after the viceroyalty itself had ended. That persistence is its own kind of evidence: the angel-militia image had become a durable regional genre in its own right, independent of the colonial administration that originally gave it context. The costume details soften slightly with time, but the core grammar — plume, lace, gun at rest — holds almost unchanged.
