A four-colour chromolithograph, 92 by 62 cm, published by Sovkino in Moscow in 1929 in an edition of 10,000 and printed at the Sovkino lithography. Pavel Petrov-Bytov made his name at the Leningrad studio arguing that Soviet cinema had drifted away from ordinary audiences. The poster for his Gorky adaptation is accordingly direct — it wants to be read from across a street. The scale of the lettering against the figure work; the type is not a caption here, it is a structural element carrying its share of the composition. Four colours, one street, a story about who gets to be strong.
