A colour lithograph in the landscape format, 72 by 108 cm, published by Mezhrabpom-Film in 1929 and printed at the Second State Chromolithography of Mospoligraf, edition of 10,000. Yakov Protazanov was the most commercially fluent director working in the USSR, and this Chekhov anthology shows the montage-era poster style applied to material that is anything but revolutionary — proof of how completely the new graphic language had taken over. The horizontal format itself: most Soviet one-sheets stand upright, and a landscape sheet was a deliberate and more expensive choice of billing space. Chekhov's petty officials, advertised in the visual language of the avant-garde.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
