See pieces like it you can buyErnst Deutsch-Dryden's 1912 poster for Urban Gad's Das Mädchen ohne Vaterland, reproduced from the standard illustrated catalogue of the period's cinema. In 1912 the multi-reel feature was barely three years old and the film poster had no settled conventions of its own. Dryden was importing them wholesale from commercial advertising, and this is among the earliest instances of that transfer surviving in reproduction. The narrow columnar format, matching the hoarding sizes German printers already used for consumer goods rather than any cinema-specific standard. A new medium, still borrowing its clothes.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
