See pieces like it you can buyA German placard of 1921 for Der Eid des Stephan Huller, designed by Willy Dietrich. The fated-vow melodrama was one of Weimar's most reliable formats, and its moral machinery, a binding promise and an inescapable consequence, is the same machinery that drives the period's supernatural films with the supernatural taken out. Dietrich builds the sheet around a single upright figure against a dominant flat ground, the standard German solution of the moment for a picture sold on one character. Doom arranged by contract rather than by curse.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
