Ernst Deutsch-Dryden's 1913 poster for Urban Gad's Die Suffragette, a German feature made while the British suffrage campaign was at its most militant. German cinema took the suffrage movement as contemporary subject matter within months of the events themselves. The poster is evidence of how quickly the new medium metabolised politics — and of how it preferred to package that politics as a portrait rather than a cause. The extreme vertical proportion, better than two to one, which forces the composition into a column and gives the dog a role it would not have in a wider format. A political movement, sold as a silhouette.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
