A 1920 variant placard from the Decla campaign, printed after designs by Erich Ludwig Stahl and Otto Arpke, carrying the campaign's famous imperative line rather than the film's title. This was among the first film campaigns anywhere to sell a slogan instead of a story, and to set the advertising in the same distorted visual language as the picture. Modern film marketing's habit of borrowing a film's own style begins in this Berlin season. The lettering does the work of the image — it leans, thickens and refuses to sit level, so the sentence reads as though it were being said by someone unwell. An instruction that outlived the film it was written for.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
