A 1918 poster for the D. W. Griffith production, made with British government cooperation and partly photographed in France and England. Griffith went to Europe in 1917 at official invitation and returned with the first major American feature to use the Western Front as a location rather than a set. The film is propaganda and Griffith later said so; the poster is the propaganda's shopfront. The domestic register of the imagery — the war reduced to a village and a family, which is precisely how the picture argued its case. The front line, sold as a threat to the parlour.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
