Fritz Gottfried Kirchbach's 1926 German poster for In Treue stark, a picture drawing on the memory of the Imperial German navy. Weimar cinema produced a steady run of pictures rehabilitating the wartime military, and their advertising is often more revealing than the films — it shows exactly which emotions the distributor thought were saleable eight years after the defeat. The sheer scale of the sky against the vessel; the design withholds heroism and offers atmosphere instead. A lost war, repackaged as seamanship.
