Mihály Bíró's 1927 poster, roughly 126 by 187 centimetres, for the Vienna premiere of Krylya kholopa — retitled Iwan der Schreckliche for Austrian audiences. The retitling is the history here: a film about a serf's wings sold to Vienna under the name of a tyrant, because a tyrant was the more legible product. Distribution rewrote pictures at the border, and the poster is the receipt. Bíró's chain motif, carried over intact from his socialist campaign posters into a commercial cinema commission. A film renamed at the frontier, advertised by a man who had crossed one himself.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
