One of only two full narrative miniatures in the Book of Kells, illustrating Luke's account of the Temptation: Christ stands waist-up atop the Temple, a small dark figure of Satan crouched to his left, two angels hovering above, and a dense crowd — perhaps the watching multitude, perhaps the heavenly host — filling the space around him. The architecture is rendered with a schematic, almost diagrammatic confidence very different from the abstract interlace elsewhere in the book, evidence that the Kells workshop could shift registers between pure pattern and figural narrative within the same volume. This is Insular art doing something genuinely rare for its era: staging a story, not just symbolizing one. It sits within the text of Luke's Gospel itself rather than prefacing it, interrupting the reader mid-sentence with the full weight of the image.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
