A chromolithograph published in Petrograd by Kino-Sever in 1924 for Ivan Perestiani's civil-war adventure. Red Imps was the first genuine popular hit of Soviet cinema — an adventure picture that proved revolutionary subject matter could fill a hall. This sheet dates from the earliest years of the designed Soviet film poster, before the montage style had fully hardened into a house manner. How much closer this is to illustration than the later montage sheets; 1924 is early enough that the drawing still tells a story rather than assembling one. The moment Soviet cinema discovered it could be popular.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
