A Pathé Frères / SCAGL affiche of 1911 for Michel Carré's La Navaja, from Cândido Aragonez de Faria, who died in Paris that December. SCAGL was Pathé's prestige arm, founded to bring literary authors and stage actors into film and answer the charge that cinema was a fairground amusement. Faria's late posters for it show the affiche growing up alongside the product — less fairground banner, more dramatic illustration. The knife is the compositional hinge; everything in the drawing angles toward it, which is how a silent poster produces suspense. The end of a career that had drawn cinema's face for its entire first decade.
