A French affiche for the 1904 Pathé historical short Le Règne de Louis XIV, drawn by the Brazilian-born poster designer Cândido Aragonez de Faria. Faria ran Pathé's poster atelier through the industry's first decade and effectively set the visual grammar of the film poster: a tableau of the picture's biggest scene, the title in banner script, the brand beneath. Cinema had no advertising language of its own yet, so he borrowed from the music-hall affiche and taught it to sell moving pictures. The composition is horizontal, not vertical — Faria staged it like a proscenium, so the eye reads it as a stage set rather than a page. The first grammar of film advertising, worked out in a Paris print shop before anyone knew what a film poster was.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
