A French affiche of 1926 for René Clair's fantasy Le Voyage imaginaire, signed by the caricaturist and poster designer Bécan. Clair had come out of the Paris avant-garde with Entr'acte and was working out how to fold surrealist play into commercial comedy. Bécan's poster shows the trade meeting that experiment halfway — recognisably a comedy sheet, but with the dream logic left in. Bécan's line is a newspaper caricaturist's, quick and elastic; it makes the fantasy read as funny rather than eerie. The avant-garde slipping quietly into the neighbourhood cinema.
