A French affiche of 1912 for Albert Capellani's four-part Les Misérables, made for Pathé Frères by SCAGL, from the Faria atelier. Capellani's Les Misérables ran to nearly three hours across four parts and is one of the first genuine feature films in Europe — proof that cinema could sustain a novel rather than an anecdote. The poster had to sell length itself, a thing no film advertisement had needed to do before. The horizontal composition treats the story as a frieze of episodes rather than a single scene, matching the multi-part release. The moment the film became long enough to be called a work.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
