A very large French affiche published by Aubert in 1928 for Pierre Colombier's Les Transatlantiques, after Abel Hermant, held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The transatlantic comedy of manners was a French staple of the twenties, and 1928 was the last year such a film could be made silent without apology. Aubert was among the major French distributors of the period, and this sheet is a full-scale record of how it dressed a wall. The BnF scanned this at close to seven thousand pixels tall; at full size the paper fibre and the grain of the lithographic stone are both legible. The last confident year of the silent screen, printed at wall height.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
