Morfinisten
Unknown, 1911
No print size passed the check for this piece: at 8 x 10 in, 146 dpi; a historical scan is never enlarged. We would rather show it than sell a soft print.
See pieces like it you can buyThe 1911 Danish poster for Morfinisten, issued by Det skandinavisk-russiske Handelshus, carrying a still of the actor Albrecht Schmidt. Danish cinema in these years took subjects — narcotics, prostitution, suicide — that American and British production codes would spend the next thirty years forbidding. The bluntness of the title is itself the historical evidence. The lettering is set flat and plain, with no attempt to soften what is being sold. A word on a wall that nobody yet felt obliged to hide.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
