A 1928 half-sheet (22 by 28 inches) for the Warner Bros. production directed by Michael Curtiz. Warners built the picture as a part-talkie transitional epic, and its flood sequence — staged with enormous quantities of real water and hundreds of extras — became one of the industry's cautionary tales about spectacle and safety. It sits exactly on the seam between the silent and sound eras. How the deluge is rendered as a diagonal mass, giving the small horizontal sheet a sense of collapse. The last silent spectacle, already hearing the future.
