A Soviet sheet for Eisenstein's October, withdrawn from circulation because it depicted Leon Trotsky, by then in exile. Few surviving artefacts show the mechanics of Soviet image control this plainly. The film itself was recut to remove Trotsky; the poster could only be taken down. What remains is a printed object that the state decided should not exist. Read this one as a document as much as a design — the figure that caused its recall is still there on the sheet. History as it was printed, before history was corrected.
