The Cloisters Apocalypse illustrates the Book of Revelation with 72 half- and full-page miniatures across just 40 folios — an extraordinarily high ratio of image to text that makes it read almost like a graphic novel of the end of the world. Made in Normandy around 1330, likely for a member of the de Montigny family (whose partially erased coat of arms survives on a dedication leaf), it belongs to a distinct genre of illustrated apocalypse manuscripts that flourished in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century England and France, translating John of Patmos's visions — beasts, trumpets, seals, the New Jerusalem — into a continuous visual sequence. The palette is cooler and more linear than contemporary French court illumination, closer to stained glass in its saturated blues and reds. It has been held by the Met's Cloisters museum, devoted to medieval European art, since 1968.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
