See pieces like it you can buyA French affiche of 1925 for Pierre Marodon's Salammbô, adapted from Flaubert's novel of mercenary revolt in ancient Carthage. The mid-1920s were the high tide of the European super-production, when French and Franco-German capital tried to out-build Hollywood on ancient-world spectacle. Flaubert's archaeological prose gave that ambition a respectable literary cover. The design assembles the cast as a frieze rather than isolating one face — the picture is being sold on ensemble and scale, not on a single name. Flaubert's Carthage, rebuilt in a French studio and sold by the acre.

Before a size goes on sale, the file is measured against it: pixels per inch at that size, how much of the picture a crop would lose, tone and sharpness. A size that fails is not offered, so there is nothing to choose wrong.
